EXPLORE THE MUSIC > COMMISSIONING PROGRAM

[Gambill] chooses their repertoire and their commissions in a kind of educational partnership with their community. All this adds up to a new and vital model for American orchestras.

      - James Undercofler, President and CEO, Philadelphia Orchestra

Orchestra Nashville commissioned its first work in 1995 from Conni Ellisor. That work, Conversations In Silence, went on to become the title track of their debut CD on Warner Brothers Records. Since then, Orchestra Nashville has commissioned and premiered 36 works from American composers. During the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons Orchestra Nashville will premiere an additional six commisions.

By crossing traditional musical boundaries with new works, Orchestra Nashville is challenging audience’s perception of what an orchestra can be. A close collaboration with Nashville’s diverse music community has also played a vital role in establishing Orchestra Nashville’s reputation for imaginative programming and artistic excellence.

Whatever this group plays, the quality of the musicianship and the active connection between composer and audience put Orchestra Nashville indisputably in the top ranks of American orchestras.
